Parlare di DR VMware si tratta di considerare fattori quali il SRM (Site Recovery Manager) come pure il vMotion, il Fault-Tolerance (FT) e l’HA (high availability)

Quando vSphere HA è abilitato in un sistema a cluster active-backup, le VM che operano all’interno del cluster sono protette in termini di host hardware and software failure; in caso di eventuale guasto una VM viene riattivata nella parte non soggetta a guasto; è necessario riservare le corrette risorse al cluster per garantire la disponibilità alla VM di ripartire.

In vSphere 6.7 ci sono tre HA control policies:

definire un failover capacity con un numero statico di hosts in cluster
definire un failover capacity riservando una percentuale di risorse in cluster
dedicare failover hosts

vMotion permette a VM operative di spostarsi o migrare tra vSphere hosts e per live vMotion è necessario assegnare le stesse risorse CPU e le stesse regole tra hosts (ESXi).

Faut-Tolerance (FT) provvede a meccanismi di protezione per una determinata VM presente in un host ESXi (oppure datastorage), abilitando una seconda running-copy della VM operativa in un differente host/datastore; in questo modo la seconda VM è identica alla primaria ed il failover è visto in modo automatico.

VMCP (Virtual Machine Component Protection) è una tecnologia a partire da vSphere 6.0 impiegato per block-based storage; due tipi di storage failure sono considerati:

PDL è quando lo storage array perde l’accesso per offline o indisponibilità, una codifica SCSI è trasmessa verso l’host ESXi server;

APD è quando l’ESXi non riesce a connettersi allo storage array (no codifica SCSI arriva), allora lo storage devices è marcato come indisponibile.

Il focus comunque di un DR (Disaster Recovery) è il SRM (Site Recovery Manager) il quale consiste in una tecnica di replicazione dei siti primario (active) e secondario (standby) integrandosi con vSphere vCenter server e web-client come pure con NSX e vSAN (software-defined datacenter SDDC).

SRM supporta funzionalità quali centralized recovery plan, non-disruptive testing e automated orchestration con caratteristiche di failover in caso di DR e failback in caso di recovery del sito primario.

SRM utilizza due istanze di vCenter Server, una per ogni site (no stretching vSphere cluster tra siti quale è il metodo vMSC disaster-avoidance)

Storage vMotion	This moves VM configuration files and disks between storage location that have been presented to a host
vSphere Storage API	Allows third parties to build agentless backup and disaster recovery solution that integrate with the vSphere platform
vSphere Replication	Provides the ability to replicate VM between sites
vCenter Server with PSC (Services Controller)	Provides a single management interface to configure and monitor the resources available
vCenter Link Mode	The same above but with multiple vCenter together managed from a single management client
